The prose in this one is genuinely lyrical, especially the way Anpao’s quest builds through the interconnected stories. My daughter finished it in two sittings and immediately asked to read the creation myths again out loud.
I picked this up for my kids during a sale and the mythic storytelling pulled them in right away — Anpao’s quest feels epic but reads fast. The prose is poetic without getting heavy, and the Newbery nod made me trust the quality. Definitely a keeper on our shelf.
